I had a range of emotions while reading this document, which admittedly I had never read before. I feel as though we as Americans have benefited so much from so many of the freedoms which we enjoy in this country as a result of our own Constitution which seemed to be a model for the UN human rights document. Sadly though as I was reading this and realizing that it was written in 1948, I realized that very few countries to this day actually allow their citizenry to enjoy some of these unbelievable basic human rights. Also some things that jumped out at me where the declaration that al humans should be able to earn a living wage and effectively have social security coverage( not specifically social security as we know it in the U.S) and unemployment coverage and even free education throughout the formative years with higher education being made available based on merit. We as Americans have some of these protections but not all the minimum wage in this country is 8 bucks an hour how is that a living wage? you cannot support a family on that. Also higher education in this country is definitely not determined by merit but rather by ability to pay, and never mind the U.S how about so many other countries where many children don't EVER get to attend school? So although I feel good about my own life and have fought and bled for this country I am still saddened that 65 years after the U.N document was written even the wealthiest countries on our planet barely live up to it.
